Who We Are:

The Central Alberta Diversity Association is a coalition of diverse groups and individuals in Central Alberta who have come together to promote the positive value of diversity in general, and harmonious race relations in particular. The project began a response to indications from several different sources that a “race relations” project was needed in Central Alberta.

We began in April 1998 by holding a series of public consultations to share perceptions and experiences related to race relations issues. In these sessions, participants identified community responses to changing demographics and provided direction to initiatives that could be taken to enhance race relations in Central Alberta. The series of consultations charted a course for the project and determined the key messages to be communicated to the public. Another consultation session, held in October 1999, provided additional direction and shaped the initiatives currently being undertaken by the project.

What We Do:

The Central Alberta Diversity Association (or CADA) consists of a circle of people interested in accepting, modeling, promoting, sharing and valuing diversity within our communities. Because we care about peace, harmony, equity and togetherness in the circle of humanity, we will take positive diversity messages deep into the hearts of our communities through community-based initiatives at many different levels. We want to ensure that we maintain harmony in the future and treat all citizens with the respect and dignity they deserve, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, special need or disability.

CADA's primary funders are The Multiculturalism Department of Canadian Heritage and The Alberta Human Rights, Multiculturalism and Education Fund of Alberta Community Development. This report is based on the activities of CADA for the past funding period of October 1st, 2003 to September 30, 2005.

CADA is a community action against all forms of discrimination. Ongoing anti-discrimination presentations have been made in many schools throughout Central Alberta and upon follow-up, teachers and "ethnic minority" students informed us that they have experienced increased "acceptance" in their schools since the presentations. CADA continues to work on societal change and the inclusion of marginalized individuals in the workforce and the community. The Governor General, Adrienne Clarkson, called our Mayor Morris Flewwelling in June of 2005 and commented positively to him, on our diversity work in Red Deer and area.

March 21st International Dinner and Program

About March 21st

March 21st marks the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa when 69 peaceful demonstrators against apartheid were killed and another 300 were injured, mostly shot in the back by South African police. In 1966, the United Nations declared that March 21st would be the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, in commemoration of this tragic event. Since 1989, the Canadian government has been supporting anti-racism campaigns to mark March 21. This year, with funds from Canadian Heritage, the Central Alberta Diversity Project will again be funding special projects to celebrate the value of diversity and oppose prejudice.

Each year CADA holds a dinner and program to mark this important day to remind everyone of this important event. On or about March 21st, CADA has an event with food, entertainment and important information about discrimination and what we all can do to make a positive difference in our community. Please mark this date on your calendar and then check our website or email us at cadassoc@telus.net or call us at 403-340-2143 to make sure you can attend and be a part of this important movement.
